![]() Radiohead never had the mainstream influence to encourage a generation of musicians not to rock. Maybe, but in my opinion, the only people that actually listen to Radiohead are rock critics and music snobs. It could also be argued that since Coldplay is a pale imitation of Radiohead that Radiohead should actually receive the blame for the decline of rocking. Suddenly everyone starting playing piano ballads and practicing their falsetto (and not a rocking Freddie Mercury falsetto, a Chris Martin falsetto). In 2000, a British band called Coldplay released an album called Parachutes and this began the decline of rocking. I believe the reason for the decline of rocking came about ten years later. Nirvana took the focus off of rocking and put the focus on being depressed and hating yourself, but they still rocked. So what caused this decline in rocking? Some might point to the arrival of Nirvana and say that they made rocking unpopular and uncool. And I love that type of music, but sometimes you need a little rock. There is, but it is mostly more mellow stuff or Americana/folk type stuff. And that's not saying that there is not good music out there. I would say that bands these days definitely do not rock as much as they used to. Do bands still do this in our day? Or have people gotten too serious and forgotten how to just rock? And does this even matter? (I will now take the time to acknowledge the fact that I realize the idea of rock is an abstract concept and is pretty much undefinable, one of those things you can't describe but you know it when you see it or maybe in this example, when you hear it) ![]() Sometimes they rocked with slow ballads and sometimes with just hard and fast songs, but they just wanted to rock. All that really mattered to these guys was rocking. Van Halen, ACDC, and any of the bands that might fall under the hair/glam band category in the eighties. Do bands still rock? You look back at the seventies and eighties and there were all these bands that just rocked.
